Any Book Suggestions?

One of the women from our foster/adoption support group emailed me. She and her husband will be adopting "Jennie" in November. I told her that we would pass their email along in the hopes that one of you, dear readers, may have a suggestion to offer.

"We are looking for good book recommendation for a 4 yr old girl who is being adopted and doesn't really understand the whole forever family/adoption scenario. She has attachment issues and has been in many foster homes in her short life. Any suggestions??

Thanks!!!!

  1. Have her check these out on Am*zon. In my heart by Molly Bang. I Don't Have Your Eyes by Carrie Kitze. My family is forever by Nancy Carlsson. Rosie's Family: An Adoption Story by Lori Rosove (this one tackles adoption directly but has dogs instead of people.)

The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn Child is about attachment not adoption but good read for this age. Pablo's Tree by Pat Mora is about a 5 yr old boy adopted as a baby and his relationship with his adoptive grandfather. It is a beautiful story and even though my daughter (4 1/2 when she came to me with RAD) couldn't directly relate she LOVED this story and connected it to her being adopted and wanted and connecting to an extended family. Oh, How You Make My Heart Sing!: A Heartfelt Story of Adoption by Beverly Wright is more about kinship adoption and from a Christian perspective BUT it is a lovely story.

I think I should stop here... Feel free to pass along my email if I can be helpful on the book front (or attachment issues/4 year old.)

  2. "I Love You Because You're You" by Liza Baker is one of our favorites- it's not about adoption, but it's good for getting the message of unconditional love across to a young child.
"We Belong Together" is "a book about adoption and families" by Todd Parr and it's good for her age group, too. It doesn't use the word adoption or get into the process- it's all about the loving relationship. It focuses on a child's needs and the parents' fulfilling them, so there is the criticism that it isn't also about what the child gives, but our kids have enjoyed it all the same and I would recommend it.
I've found a bunch of recommendations by browsing around Amazon, too. Related book suggestions and "Listmania" booklists have been really helpful for looking for foster care/adoption books. Wish them luck!
