Dear Abby: Is this normal?

Dear Abby:

Standing here in the kitchen, The Other Mother just told me in her most emphatic voice that she needs to go to 7*11 or Dunk*n Donuts so she can use their bathroom.  OKaayyyyyy????.... We have two full and one half baths...and she needs to (ahem) "go" elsewhere?

I'm guessing it has to do with the fact that we have four boys with bad aim, a warped sense of cleanliness, BIG FEELINGS, and limited attention span to attend to the task at hand.

She thinks the bathrooms are contaminated.  I'm afraid she may be right.

Tonight we used a spray bleach cleanser on the floor, walls and toilet and we are still a little grossed out in our own home.......is this normal?

  1. Mmm, if you all would be more comfortable using a public restroom over your own home maybe a sandblaster would help?
Alternately, send the boys to the public restrooms.

  3. I don't know if it's universally normal, but it's my normal.

I refuse to go in Simeon's bathroom. And he's only allowed to use the one bathroom. I either have to go in and wipe it down every time he goes, or wait until Leo gets home and ask him to do it.

Perhaps you could keep a tub of those cleaner wipes on the back of the toilet and make the boys wipe everything down with one before they walk out. Teaching them that will help the relationship they may have with any future housemates.

I also make him sit down to go. I just used spray bleach cleaner on the floor, walls and toilet Friday before my mom came. Even with the regular wipe down, things get sticky and stinky.

    Yeah, you're not alone.

  5. With four boys at home, we designated one of our bathrooms just for us and another just for them! It works out great. I just wish there was a drain in the floor so I could hose down theirs!

  6. I like Essie's idea. Here, the boys have their own bathroom. AND they clean it themselves, with us overseeing of course to make sure it does get clean. They have learned to have better aim.

  7. oh, my , goodness!
    THANK YOU.
After having 3 girls. I thought I was the only one with a gross little boy, with NO aim. I was ready to abandon my house. I couldn't stand to go into the bathroom, fearing all kinds of grossness. The husband cleaned, bleached and cleaned again yesterday after I threatened to sell the house.
    boys are so gross.

  8. One of the greatest shocks of my life after adopting my son was that pee could go in so many places that weren't the toilet. Alas, it's normal.
